The Umbrella Academy - A Review of Sorts (No Spoilers!)
Yep. Season 3 of The Umbrella Academy dropped on Netflix on the 22/06/22 and me, yes me, I'd watched all 10 episodes by the 24th. It just wrapped me up in its juicy little Ben-arms and wouldn't let go. I loved it, though I do have to say this one felt a little bit different to the first two seasons.
I guess the main reason for this is it centres around the Hotel Oblivion, a fictitious place, rather than a broader historic time and particular event that we're able to relate to and identify with. After all, in Season Three they're battling against the end of the Universe, and not just the world. Also, as opposed to battling events, time and circumstance being the unseen adversary, they're up against another version of themselves in this newly created timeline - the Sparrows - with their dead Ben now being alive; the link that connects the two families (along with Reginal Hargreaves, Mother, and Pogo) - sort of.
I mean, how does anyone connect this dysfunctional family?
Truly dysfunctional.
And I loved it.
Sure, there were a couple of points where I personally thought the writing was a little weaker. For me this showed in some of the dialogue in earlier episodes, one or two lazy jokes, and maybe one gratuitous fight scene too many - I'm thinking Lila and 5. It wasn't needed, and didn't add anything given their verbal battles are so much funnier. But that said the rest was excellent. There were crazy dance scenes, memorable family moments, new characters and powers, Bus-ball, the return of Harlan, bug-eyed creeps, deception, intrigue, great soundtrack and...
And...
The darkest of humour.
Had me grinning from ear to ear (I don't do laughing).
Overall I loved it.
It's just something else.
And my criticism of the writing fades early on, the storyline and scenarios growing the stronger and getting back to their awesome selves. Indeed, by the end I had no idea what was going on and was cheering all the way. Can't wait to see what happens in Season 4. Watch it - if you like this sort of thing. It's definitely one of my guilty pleasures!
4.5 out of 5 stars for me.
